Replace a Factory Gauge with New Aftermarket Gauge Internals
Replacing a factory OEM stock gauge with a new aftermarket gauge is very easy, in these steps we show you what it takes to take apart and add a customized gauge. Size matters in this case to the key to making sure everything fits well is getting the right gauge for your application. In this tutorial we used a gauge that was small enough to go inside the OEM gauge housing and had the same sweep, this allowed us to use everything but the factory internals and all we had to do was align and cut out the outer housing so we could extend the fitment of the gauge.
What you Will need:
-Super Glue
-Sand Paper
-A way to hold small things while glue dries
-Small Solderable wires Different Colors will help for convenience
-Clamps
-Sharpie
-Pliers
-Razor
-Rivet Puncher
-Vice Grips
-Scissors
-Tweezers
-Etcher
-Screwdriver
-Thin Plastic
-Dremmel
-a Replacement Temperature Gauge
1. use a Dremmel, or saw to carefully take the face off your Replacement Gauge; these are usually glued on.
2. Mark the wire locations, and remove the wires if possible.
3. Wrap thin plastic around the new Gauge Internals, make sure its Tight, if you’re gluing it, a Cable Tie will helpkeep it in position while the glue sets.
4. use the Old temperature gauge face and frame to determine the position of the new Internals.
5. Use a Sharpie to mark where the top of the Gauge Face will go, do the same for the depth of the face.
6. take your etcher and grind out the Rivets, if they do not go peacefully, rivet-punch them.
7. Remove the Needle and Tail from their Pivot rod Mount, and Glue the Origonal Needle on the mounting Peice.
8. we used 3 tools together to make a Custom Drying Mount for the needle.
9. mount the Needle, and put the face over to check for fitting, Sliding the new internals in the Plastic to make sure needle Placement is correct.
10. find where the new internals will go in the Old Gauge Frame, Mark this, THIS STEP IS CRITICAL TAKE YOUR TIME, YOUR PARTS ARE MADE OF UNOBTANIUM AND CANNOT BE “Un-cut”
11. Cut with your Dremmel Cutting Wheel, again, next to the line, not on it, and take your Time!
12. Switch over to a heavy Sanding wheel and round the hole out so its smooth against the line you marked..
13. Check for fitting.
14. Repeat steps 12 and 13 till it fits tightly.
15. Mount the new internals in the Frame, and put the needle on, slip the face over the needle, and line it up for preview.
16. Check the full range of the needle where it rests without pressure will be where it stays when the vehicle is cold.
17. Super Glue the new internals in their place once you’re sure its functional and Looks good. if you are unsure about how it looks, come back in an hour or 2, and just glance, That’ll tell you if it looks “Right”
18. wire accordingly and Install Back in your Vehicle.
