There are two basic styles of speedometers, in this tutorial we are going to be cover a manual speedo. Other names for this type of speedometer are magnetic speedometer, manual speedometer or eddy current speedometer. All speedometers that were built from 1900 to about 1990 where this style of speedometer. This speedometer is operated by a rotating gear from the transmission that is fed up to the speedometer, a shaft is rotated and a magnetic spindle is turned via a magnet to show the speed of the vehicle. Replacing a factory OEM stock gauge with a new aftermarket gauge is very easy, in these steps we show you what it takes to take apart and add a customized gauge. Size matters in this case to the key to making sure everything fits well is getting the right gauge for your application. In this tutorial we used a gauge that was small enough to go inside the OEM gauge housing and had the same sweep, this allowed us to use everything but the factory internals and all we had to do was align and cut out the outer housing so we could extend the fitment of the gauge.
